Bhupinder Singh Bhatia of Bhilai-The Mechanical Engineer Who Helps the Helpless With Ayurveda!

Some time ago I wrote a blog article here where I shared a personal experience of mine about a dreaded disease which is commonly referred as the suicide disease or trigeminal neuralgia. You can read that blog here!

I had the slightest thought then that this information would be of some help to several helpless people suffering from this extremely painful neuralgic pain syndrome who keep visiting modern medical doctors for getting all kinds of known pain management methods, though not quite successful always.

A few of them during this time had taken the pains to search out my contact information to know the whereabouts of my friend Mr. Bhupinder Singh Bhatia (B.S.Bhatia) of Bhilai so that they can contact him for getting the ayurvedic preparation that he had tried out successfully to treat my sister in law residing in Canada who was suffering from this dreadful disease.

Recently I had a visit to Bhilai wherein I met my old friend Mr Bhatia wherein I learnt about the successful administration of his ayurvedic preparation for every one who approached him taking my reference in this manner.

Since this ayurvedic preparation he had originally made by application of his technical mind coupled with the additional knowledge he had in ayurveda, has been now getting proved to be a successful cure for quite many people, I thought it would be prudent to publish some more information through this platform. This might help those who want such help to know about Mr Bhatia more and contact him directly.

Above L-R: Mr Bhatia, the author and wife and Mrs Bhatia

Mr Bhatia had been my senior colleague in the erstwhile Bhilai Engineering and Design Bureau (BEDB), the engineering design and consultancy department of Bhilai Steel Plant that existed during 1972-2015 period. In fact it was a break away group from Central Engineering Design Bureau (CEDB) of Hindustan Steel Limited which managed the public sector integrated steel plants of India before it got further expanded and renamed as the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). Some time in 1972, the central government took actions to form a separate engineering company  the Metallurgical and Engineering Consultants Limited, now well known as Mecon Limited by getting CEDB isolated from Hindustan Steel Limited. While doing so, as several engineers working in CEDB at Bhilai were not keen to join the new company, it was decided to retain them within Hindustan Steel Limited in Bhilai by creating a new department called BEDB for catering to the needs of Bhilai Steel Plant.

In 1986, the Bhilai Steel Plant management thought it prudent to expand BEDB with the induction of more young engineers and that caused me to get transferred to this department from the works area of Bhilai Steel Plant. It was here that I first met Mr Bhatia. He was a mechanical engineer having a couple of years more experience in the design and engineering side and I remember him as a pleasing and intelligent engineers always enthusiastic to solve various kinds of engineering problems that arouse in the steel plant. We worked in different areas of engineering specializations and soon we became good colleagues and friends. This much is written for the reader to get a broad idea regarding the initial professional background of Mr Bhatia.

Mr Bhatia was a learner and had a keen enthusiasm to learn new things. He was also a charming personality who was keen to surprise his colleagues and friends with his newly learnt things. I remember his hobbies during that period that involved homeopathy and the Japanese art of paper folding called origami. Perhaps his interest in learning new things got him attracted to the ancient Indian medical system, ayurveda, some time in the beginning of the Nineteen Nineties.

As there was a shortage of Ayurveda training centers and also a shortage of trained Ayurveda physicians in those days, many north Indian state governments allowed interested candidates to learn the fundamentals of this system by various correspondence courses and also from traditional practitioners who imparted their knowledge through unconventional methods. Some state governments tested the knowledge and skills of such students by conducting periodic examinations and awarding the successful candidates with degrees like 'Ayurveda Ratna' which enabled the successful candidates to register themselves as registered medical practitioners (RMP) in Ayurveda. Ayurveda being a traditional knowledge, its mastery needed a good command of Hindi and Sanskrit. Mr Bhatia, being from a Sikh family settled in central India, had a good knowledge in these languages.

It was another common friend of ours who imparted interest in Ayurveda in him. To be very frank, I too was interested, but my weak Hindi was an obstacle. This friend's family had been in the practice of Ayurveda. I remember him enticing we engineers to take up the study of this noble knowledge system of India so that we could unearth hidden treasures of ancient medicine for the benefit of people suffering from diseases with no cure in other medical systems.

My friend, Bhatia, took the challenge and within a couple of years he passed the Ayurveda Ratna examination which enabled him to get a licence to practice ayurveda as an RMP. I remember him taking the trouble to get the required permissions from the Bhilai Steel Plant management for venturing in to this profession during holidays and off times without affecting his normal duties as an engineering officer of the steel plant.

In the beginning things were not that easy. It was required to get experience. And I have been witnessing his progress in this field with sheer determination and hard work which he undertook as a dedicated hobby. Mr Bhatia has been a devout Sikh who attended Sikh satsangs (devotional group worship) every day evening where he religiously read and recited from the Sikh holy book, Guru Grandh Saheb. He had the blessing of his personal guru. All these helped him to master Ayurveda, especially in its branch which is known as the Raja Yog or the branch of Ayurveda that was privy to the rich and the royals.

He remained as my good friend all through out these years and he used to discuss the wonders of medicine system that Raja Yoga offered. The logical engineering mind with knowledge of modern science helped him to understand things better. When his system yielded success in treating diseases of many, he decided to be selective and doing his medical treatment hobby only for rare and incurable diseases where in he could experiment with his knowledge and experience.

And that was what he had been doing all these years. He employs his branch of Ayurveda system for bringing peace to many renowned people, bureaucrats, politicians, businessmen and the like who felt helpless with their unique health problems for which the modern medical field offered little.

Fortunately, there are many Ayurvedic pharma companies in India who produce basic Ayurveda medicines as per ancient books. However, many of these Raja Yog medicines employing what is called the Ras Chikitsa system are very expensive. Not only they are expensive, but their use without proper understanding of the physiological balance of the patients' body with respect to what is known as vat, pith and kaph would not normally yield any appreciable results. However, when a knowledgeable Ayurveda doctor like Mr Bhatia proportions these medicines according to the physiology of the patient concerned, wonders do take place.

Mr Bhatia got retired from Bhilai Steel Plant and he devotes more time now in serving those who desire to seek Ayurveda as an alternative for their physical or psychological ailments. As a matter of principle, he does not take any fee for his medical treatment. His services are free. However, the patients have to bear the costs of the medicines, which could be expensive in certain cases.

Mr Bhatia lives in his residence which is located at Priyadarshini Parisar East, Bhilai, Chhattisgarh State. He can be contacted @ 91-9826176514 (Mobile and WhatsApp call)

Experimenting Food Supplements for Self Managing Type-2 Diabetes

A couple of years ago, I too joined the growing community of diabetic patients. All of a sudden, I discovered that my normal blood sugar levels are no more within the limits prescribed by learned medical researchers. The practice of visiting the doctor at regular intervals and the practice of extracting blood samples began as a routine.

For a couple of months, it was abstinence from free sugar intake, that was tried for control of blood sugar level. So, coffee, tea and other sugar drinks became bitter. Soon, diet control had to be discarded as it became ineffective. Various  Ayurvedic  and homeopathic medicines as available in the market too became not so effective. Then the doctor decided it was time for the chemical drugs of modern medicine.

It began with Metformin slow release tablet 500 mg once a day, only to be supplemented by Glimipiride 1 mg. In a couple of months, that too was not enough and the doctor was inclined to prescribe higher dosages and perhaps other possible combinations of diabetic drugs as available now (see this chart).

Experienced diabetic seniors have all gone through this regime and they knew that this disease is not manageable by oral tablets for a long time. Sooner or later, they have to inject insulin into their bodies for making up the shortfall of this hormone which is otherwise produced by the endocrine gland called pancreas.

It is believed that several health problems that people have are due to hormonal imbalances within the body. Hormones are complex chemicals produced by some glands or organs within the body. These complex chemicals are circulated in the blood circulation system in small quantities for helping the body to perform various functions such as digestion, growth, etc.

When hormones are absent, more or less in the body, various health problems arise. The hormone producing glands of the body start behaving abnormally due to various reasons, the most prominent being ageing. Besides, absence of certain micro nutrients within food could also cause hormone imbalances.

One of the common ailment that a good majority of humans develop at some stage of life is due to the imbalance of the hormone called insulin which is produced by the body organ called pancreas. Insulin is essential for the body to convert carbohydrates and sugars in the food to energy and to convert excess sugars to fats to be stored up in the body for future use. Insulin helps in the control of sugar concentration in the blood within certain limits.

When insulin production by pancreas gets affected due to some reason, the result is the debilitating, but mostly manageable disease called Diabetes mellitus (DM) or simply, diabetes. There are a few types of diabetes. But the most common that the majority of people have is the type-2 diabetes. I, too have type-2 diabetes.

There are various methods by which diabetes can be treated or managed. Modern medicine (Allopathy),  homeopathy,  Ayurveda  and other systems all have some kind of medicines and methods for the management of diabetes. But none of these systems provide a permanent cure to the disease. Complications due to high blood sugar affects the person seriously at some later stage of life. However, the quality of life could be made better by adopting proper diabetes management procedures.

When the pancreas has got some ability to produce insulin, medicines and drugs could be used to enhance the insulin production. But when this organ become fully dysfunctional, insulin injection practices may have to be followed.

But, there are several food or dietary supplements, mostly originating from herbs, that are said to provide some benefits to diabetic patients. These are mostly herbal products that are being experimented world wide which are said to have some beneficial effects for various kinds of ailments that people have. These products do not qualify as drugs or medicines as the research work on them are not fully proven in accordance with the scientific norms and are not approved by the statutory drug approving authorities. Essentially, these dietary supplements when consumed help the body to obtain some form of  chemical molecules or elements that are essential for the body through the digestive system. These micro nutrients are essential for the body to synthesize the complex hormones.

Food supplements have some beneficial effects and may not have much detrimental effects when consumed within some reasonable limits. They can be thought as similar to vitamins and minerals that are essential for proper functioning of our biological bodies.

One such supplement is derived from the plant called Gymnema sylvestre. It is found in India and is called Chakkarakkolli (in Malayalam) and Gurmari (in Hindi) both literally meaning destroyer of sugar.

Gymnema as a dietary supplement has been widely accepted for its benefits especially for the management of type-2 diabetes. Extracts from this plant in the form of capsules and powder are now marketed in many countries. Consuming one or two capsules daily has been reported as useful by several patients in controlling their blood sugar levels.

Gymnema dietary supplements can now be procured online from reputed online market places such as Amazon. In India it is available in various forms as produced and marketed by various firms under various trade names such as Zenith Nutrition Gymnema capsules, Gymnema Meshashringi Diabetic Support capsules, Gymnema Herbal Powder, Gymnivit Gymnema Powder Capsules, etc.

It is not a bad idea to have some self experiments with these products for the management of diabetes. However, it is important to have as much information as possible before such experiments are tried out and to monitor the blood sugar level changes during such self management regimes. Having a glucometer and its test strips at home may prove useful. (More options here!)

Another item that may be of interest to diabetic patients is the natural sweetener called Stevia. The purified sweetener powder obtained from Stevia plants can be safely used to sweeten food and beverages without worrying about enhancing blood sugar levels. Now Stevia powder can be ordered online in India too.

When we discuss about the management of common diabetes, it is not justified if I avoid mentioning about Ayurveda, the ancient medical system of India. This system has many cures for diabetes. Unfortunately, not all Ayurveda doctors are confident of their system of medicine. Incidentally I have been trying this system and have found much benefit in bringing my blood sugar levels under control. Since, successful Ayurveda medicines and formulations are still confidential secrets of many successful practitioners, I would not be in a position to provide more details about those medicines through which I got benefits. For example, this product is marketed as an ayurvedic supplement for diabetic control which contains Gurmari and other ayurvedic ingredients.

So, if you are not scared to experiment, try out and share your experiences here. That may be of help to those interested.

I would also suggest my readers to share their experiences in this context using the comment tool below in this page.

The Suicide Disease- Trigeminal Neuralgia- The Story How We Got Success to Overcome the Ultimate Helplessness!

Some years ago, my sister in law who is settled in Canada, suddenly developed a seriously painful health problem almost suddenly. It was later diagnosed by the Canadian doctors as TN or Trigeminal Neuralgia. Modern medicine recognizes this ailment as one of the most painful conditions known.

Unfortunately, there exist no effective cure for this problem in modern medicine, except some not so effective pain alleviating therapies, all of which have their own side effects. Once the prescribed treatment regime starts, the patient becomes more and more drug dependent. After some time, even heavy dozes of the known drugs would not give much relief and the patient's condition aggravates due to drug induced problems coupled with the original disease. These problems are all well researched and known facts.

My sister-in-law, being a doctor herself, understood the limitations of modern medicine and that caused much anxiety.  There was all possibility of she developing serious anxiety syndrome or other such problems as well, had the disease progressed further.

The Canadian doctors were doing all the best they could do. But all of them knew what was likely to happen after some time. The disease was one that did not have any known cures according to the allopathic system of medicine.

Though many people think of modern medicine as an advanced science which provides cures for all diseases that mankind faces, the reality is some thing very different.

Modern medicine, unfortunately, does not have cures for all human sufferings from various disorders and illnesses.

On the other hand, there are effective cures or disease management systems in other forms medicine both traditional or contemporary.

I had written a few blog articles on medicine earlier which could be read elsewhere in this site. You may read: My experiences and encounters with modern medicine!

The human medical sciences as we have today work in isolated compartments. There have  not been much efforts to combine the potentials of modern medicine with other systems such as ayurveda, homoeopathy, unani, naturopathy, the Chinese traditional medicine, etc and to evolve a holistic approach in the management of human diseases and health problems.

Let me come back to the story.

I have been a person who believed and some what experienced the great potentials of the various systems of medicine that we have today. My sister-in-law knew this and due to that I was informed of the problem. I was also requested to find any known remedy in any other system of medicine for this otherwise incurable disease!

This was a decade ago and at that time I used to be in Bhilai, the steel city of central India. Mr Bhupinder Singh Bhatia, a mechanical engineer by profession was my colleague and friend. As a hobby he had been learning a difficult branch of Ayurvedic treatment called the Ras Chikitsa Vidhi (medicine system based on specially processed mercury salts and metals reportedly developed in India by Acharya Nagarjuna, some 2000 years ago.). He had also obtained a licence to practice ayurvedic treatment as a hobby.

Since Mr.Bhatia was not a professional ayurveda doctor, but a professional engineer, he was determined only to treat those cases where all other systems of medicine failed to obtain any cure or relief. He used to take up such cases as an independent research as an attempt to bring back the lost glory of Indian ayurveda. Being one of my close friends, he used to discuss his methods and the details with me. I was a serious observer to his Ayurveda experiments.

My sister-in-law was having such a health problem which was a fit case for an ayurvedic experimentation. I remember discussing the various aspects of the disease with my friend in Bhilai. With his knowledge, he decided to make a powdery mixture of medicine made from a few ayurvedic medicines. All these medical drug ingredients are prepared and marketed in India by a few Indian ayurveda drug houses in accordance with the processes described in the various sanskrit texts. Though they are not common, they are available in ayurvedic drug stores in India.

The following has been the proportion of the drug mixture to be divided in to 30 equal parts for 30 days medication  that Mr Bhatia suggested based on his knowledge about these medicines:

1. Sirguladi Vati (Bati) - 20 grams
2. Godanti Bhasma-20 grams
3. Ambar Kasturyadi Vati- 4 grams
4. Swarna Bhasma- 400 milligrams
5. Ratna garbha pottali Ras- 4 to 6 grams
In India there are a few traditional ayurvedic pharma companies that make these ingredients. They are Vyas Pharma, Krishna gopal ayurved, Charak Pharma, etc. In these, Krishnagopal is a charitable trust which makes medicines on a non-profit basis.

The ingrediants as above had to be ground and mixed well using a mortar and pestle. Fine grinding is very important for getting the full curative power of the medicine. The well-ground medicine is approximately divided in to 30 equal parts and was sent to Canada for the patient for oral intake.

The dozes were advised to be taken with tea or warm water  half an hour before or after meals once or twice daily.

We waited to get the reports from the patient in Canada after she had taken the Indian medicine. We were surprised and relieved to get the very positive report. The patient got immediate relief after taking the first doze itself.

She never had the problem for the next many years and she did not have to take the entire medicine that was sent to her. The unused medicine was kept for any future emergencies, just in case the problem returned!

A month ago, she got the neuralgic attack once again, which was promptly overcome by a doze of the medicine that was in stock with her. Fortunately, these kind of ayurvedic medicines do not have any expiry date, had they been stored well in a cool dry place.

Her recent problem was communicated to me by her with a request for having another stock of the medicine procured for taking care of any future eventualities. I have just done that.

And that reminded me of  this case and I thought I should share this with my readers.

This information might be useful for any such TN patients who suffer somewhere and have lost hope.

I also earnestly hope that a holistic approach to the management of human health problems and therapeutic system adopting an integrative medicine system approach would evolve in the near future.

Information Update (06th Sept 2017)

I have written another blog later which gives some more details on this, including the contact details of my friend Mr Bhupinder Singh Bhatia of Bhilai. This may be helpful to those who seek to contact him for possible Ayurveda treatment for TN. You may click the hyperlink to read that blog.

A Visit to the New Bio-diversity Park: The Latest Tourist Attraction in Ranchi

A couple of days ago, I had the opportunity to visit and spent some time in the newly developed bio-diversity park in Ranchi.

This park was opened for public in 2012 and it is developed, maintained and managed by the forest department of Jharkhand State government.

The park is developed within existing forest land of over 500 acres. It is being developed with good intentions that the urban Ranchi people and visitors to Ranchi can enjoy the scenic beauty of the green forests and get some good idea about the flora of the forests.

Most importantly, the park is easily accessible from Ranchi. It can be accessed by road from the Birsa Munda Chowk near the Ranchi Airport within 15-20 minutes. See the location map of the park here. There exist ample parking space for the vehicles of the visitors. However, vehicles are usually not allowed inside the park.

The forest department had made a good informative website for the park which give much desired information to the public. You may visit the home page for essential information about the park.

The access to the park for the public is regulated with some nominal fees. Get the fee structure here.

The park now is in the developmental stage though many facilities have been already developed. It is a good picnic spot for groups who are interested in spending some hours in the wild serenity of the green forests without the usual dangers or difficulties  associated with such adventures.

The park has two forest trails which are carefully developed. Visitors can walk through these trails and get a feel of the forest.

A very attractive feature of the park is its horticulture efforts where many medicinal plants are grown. It is a good feature to see the rare medicinal plants many of which are used in the preparation of Ayurvedic medicine system of India. See some pictures of the medicinal plants grown in the park. It gives some opportunities for those interested in Ayurvedic research.

The park has a rose garden and a green house for developing various species of cacti. There is scope for developing a mini zoo too. However, presently such a facility does not exist. The authorities may think of this and try to breed those rare breeds of animals which provide raw material used in ayurvedic medicines.

No doubt this bio-diversity park would soon become a tourist attraction for the visitors of Ranchi in the near future.

[The blog here given in Malayalam language highlights the importance of promoting the common fruit tree found in Kerala known as 'Mullaatha' the local name for the Soursop or Graviola. In Kerala, perhaps this tree came from South America together with other South American imports like Tapioca or Cassava, which later became a secondary staple food of the Keralites a century ago. The properties of the leaves, bark, fruits and seeds to act as efficient medication to treat various forms of cancer need to be researched in a systematic way. Kerala with its ayurvedic research facilities and the natural habitat for this tree would be the ideal place to take up additional  research studies on this aspect for the common good of the people of this world.]
